About Rumi Wasi
*** Due to the pandemic, Rumi Wasi Sanctuary is not accepting retreat guests at this time, and we do not have an anticipated date of reopening. Know that this message will be removed once the situation has shifted. Thank you for understanding! ***
Rumi Wasi Sanctuary sits atop a stunning ridgeline facing westward across the Shenandoah Valley. Surrounded by pristine virgin forests and huge stone outcrops, the Sanctuary offers deep silence, stillness, and peace, with few distractions from the modern world. On any given day, the land is blessed with visitors of all kinds, including deer, turkeys, mountain lions, foxes, bobcats, bears, eagles, hawks, turkey vultures, owls, crows, ravens, and songbirds of all kinds ~ all following the shifting magic of the seasons. The forest also provides such beauty as the seasons change ~ from the first pale greens across the valley in early spring, to the full splendor of rhododendrons and mountain laurel as spring erupts in its glory; fresh wild raspberries in early summer, and sweet days of swimming in the Shenandoah River ~ only five minutes away by car ~ as well as watching thunderstorms roll in across the valley, and listening to the songs of the night creatures in a nearly deafening symphony; in the fall, the world below looks like a miniature village, with the reds, yellows, and oranges lighting up the world all around; and in the winter, the howling winds, gentle snow, and crystal clear night skies, as well as pastel sunsets only found in winter. The land is host to a Medicine Wheel and Ceremonial Fire Circle, both of which are used ritually throughout the year. The Sanctuary also has a large yoga and workshop room, fully equipped with mats, blankets, and cushions to support groups of up to 25 people during daylong events. With the Appalachian Trail just a short walk away, and historic Charles Town and Harpers Ferry 20 minutes by car, Rumi Wasi Sanctuary feels as if it’s a world away from all of the busyness of the east coast, while also being close enough for a quick escape. Rumi Wasi is located in Harpers Ferry, WV, just minutes from the Virginia line, and only 90 minutes by car from Baltimore and Washington, DC. Both Amtrak and MARC trains serve Harpers Ferry, as well.
Sometimes we all long to get away, and a vacation just doesn’t seem to do the trick. Visiting family can be wonderful ~ and stressful. And travelling with friends or loved ones can often be filled with fun and enjoyment, but not necessarily the time for peace, quiet, and inner reflection. Going on retreat is a wonderful opportunity to spend a few days intentionally inquiring within, taking the time for doing some deep personal work, and of course, rest and rejuvenation.
Rumi Wasi is a small Sanctuary, and offers the space for one person at a time to enjoy the land and all the peace and beauty it has to share. The Sanctuary retreat space offers a private bedroom with queen bed, private bathroom with shower, and a kitchen and dining area, as well as the Sanctuary yoga room, which is fully equipped with mats, cushions, and blankets. The space is private and comfortable, with ample room for those who wish to practice yoga and other movement disciplines, play musical instruments, write and create art, and engage in other supportive activities.
Retreats are available in two formats: Guided or Unguided. Both are available with or without meals.
Guided retreats are for those who wish to have daily support in the retreat process, in addition to personal practices and process. Guided retreats are available to you for either four days and three nights, or three days and two nights. Guided retreats include one session on the opening and closing days of the retreat, and for additional days may include either one or two sessions, as desired.
Session options may include:
Divination & Intuitive Guidance
Elemental Work in Nature
Art, Music, Dance
Inner Child Work
For those choosing to include meals, meal times are arranged in advance of your retreat, and accommodating most dietary needs is not a problem. If you wish to do your own cooking, that is also welcome. The retreat kitchen provides most necessary basics for cooking and food preparation.
For Guided retreats, you may choose either one or two sessions daily for full retreat days, as well as opening and closing sessions on arrival and departure days. We work with you before your retreat to plan these sessions based on your intentions and wishes.
Unguided retreats are for those who wish to enter into solitude and engage in their own personal practices and process without additional support from Angela & Helene. For those wishing to engage in an unguided retreat, the retreat Sanctuary space is available to you for either four days and three nights, or three days and two nights. For those choosing to include meals, meal times are arranged in advance of your retreat, and accommodating most dietary needs is not a problem. If you wish to do your own cooking, that is also welcome. The retreat kitchen provides most necessary basics for cooking and food preparation.
Sample Retreat Schedule ~ Guided Retreat
Day 1: Arrive mid to late afternoon, enjoy sunbathing or a nature walk, and perhaps a nap. Settle in. After a delicious dinner, intention setting ceremony, and an Intuitive Guidance session.
Day 2: Wake up to a delicious breakfast, followed by a healing session: can involve Energy Medicine, Shamanic Journey, or Guided Meditation. Following lunch, time alone to meditate, contemplate and write, and perhaps a swim in the river, or walk along the Appalachian Trail. After dinner, a Sound Medicine or Ancestral Healing session customized to your needs.
Day 3: After breakfast, a healing session involving listening to the inner child, befriending the shadow, or connecting with your guides, ancestors, or nature spirit totems. After lunch, time to meditate, or perhaps a nap, and later, the creation of a beautiful Despacho in a ceremony that aligns the individual with the rhythms of life, gratitude, and one’s deepest prayers. Following dinner, a fire ceremony in which the Despacho offering is burned.
Day 4: After breakfast, a gratitude walk in the forest, making offerings for the gifts received during the retreat. Then, around noon, a closing session, bringing together insights and ideas for the path ahead, and intending ways to integrate these things into daily life.
